“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” -Henry James

Happy Summer Solstice!

The longest day of the year. Midsommer, if you’re Swedish. A day to celebrate the gifts of the season…

Food from the ground.

Flowers, butterflies, sunshine.

Dinner on the porch in the warm evening air.

Lilacs that make the whole house smell heavenly.

Tiny apples starting to grow on the trees.

And the BIGGEST FREAKIN’ POPPIES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE growing up by the cottage!

Enjoy it! Because it’s all downhill from here, folks! Winter will be upon us again in no time. How are you spending the solstice?

Your photos are terrific. How do you control that DOF? These bring joy to my life! Thanks again for the great Father’s Day surprise.

Hi Poppy. :) The sweet DOF is thanks to really great lighting situations as of late…these overcast skies make it possible to have a really large aperture (2.8) and short focal length. I stand really close to the object I’m shooting.

YOU taught me everything I know about photo-taking! Well, you, and my excellent college prof. :)

Nice job, Mike! Love the new look for IttyBitty..and how easy it is for these old eyes to read it. The summer solstice was rainy and grey here, too, but just think about that water table getting recharged, and how happy the frogs must be!

  4. Are you a fellow gardner??? I also LOVE my hands in the dirt. What a beautiful blog! I am your newest fan!

Hi Katie! Thanks so much for your comment! I am indeed a fellow gardener. Hooray for girls with dirty hands and fingernails. Heading over to your blog to check it out, now…. :)
