30 for 30: You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile

Posted on February 26th, 2011 by Tonia No Comments

Last night Mike and I went to see “Annie” at our local playhouse. We were completely blown away…it was FANTASTIC! The kids were all amazing…they had us hooked right from the start with the brilliantly choreographed opening song “It’s a Hard Knock Life”. Thankfully someone videotaped it!! Check it out and allow your heart to be melted.

There was one tiny little girl in particular {you’ll see her in the video} who stole the show with her tenacity, and the surprising volume at which her voice projected from her teeny little body. Sandy the dog was also a hit when Annie led him on stage and rubbed his belly while singing a sweet solo. The whole thing was just awesomely entertaining. We are so lucky and grateful to have such a fantastic community theater in our little town!

If you’re just joining us, I’ve been doing the 30 for 30 Challenge- remixing 30 items of clothing into 30 outfits and not buying anything new for 30 days. This is the seventh outfit. See all the outfit posts here.

I didn’t have time to think very hard about what I was going to wear to the play, but it turned out OK…I wore wool pants, ankle boots, a striped shirt and of course a scarf. It was a casual combo with nice textures. My bangs are getting super long so I braided them to keep them out of my face. I’m feeling a little washed out these days {it’s what happens when you go more than four months of the year without any sunshine! Darn you, northern climate…}, but bright pink lipstick helps to brighten things up a little…

Once again, Charlie was not psyched that we were leaving him at home…it must seem like we don’t give our dog any attention but let me assure you that he is the most loved pup on the planet.

And now we’ll be singing all the “Annie” songs for at least a week. Mike is convinced he would have made a very handsome Daddy Warbucks. I told him it would take some real serious acting skills to play a convincing Republican…

My Twitter pal @nataliese just wrote to me: The theme of your outfit shoot should be “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” Hahaha! Yes! Perfect name for this post, thank you Natalie!

There was some crazy beautiful evening light happening in our backyard today, so we ventured outside to take a few outfit pictures. Today’s outfit is an example of how you can wear the same pants in a totally new way.

Charlie Brown the Dog spotted several deersy-dotes shyly watching the fashion shoot through the trees. He was very angry with their presence and decided to run at them as fast as his two-inch-long-legs could carry him, barking at the top of his lungs. The deer scattered with their white tails raised in alarm, and Charlie marched back to us looking very proud and feeling very big.

The thing about these pants is that they’re actually cropped. They stop just above my ankle. Not so good for wearing in the winter when exposed skin= cold skin. But I have found a solution: leg warmers. I love leg warmers because they keep my ankles and calves warm, but I can still wear regular shoes {some of my shoes aren’t roomy enough to wear thick wool socks with}. And just like that, summer pants become winter pants!

Speaking of summer clothes becoming winter clothes…both of the shirts I am wearing are actually summer shirts. I layered them to make them warm enough to wear in the winter. I don’t think you need to go out and buy completely new clothes each season- you just have to be creative with how to use your seasonal items in new ways.

Look how much snow we’ve lost! It has been downright spring-like in this neck of the woods lately. But winter isn’t over…tonight is supposed to get below freezing again. Good thing I love to play hockey with my husband or I’d have cabin fever by now. I’m not quite ready for hockey season to be over- we have so much fun playing together. Can I hear a “wooooo” from my fellow winter-lovers? Anyone? Anyone???

I’m weird.

He Sowed She Sewed

Two of my very best friends, Caitlyn and Jared, have started blogging together about their two passions: gardening and sewing. We’re all familiar with Jared around here because he has written a couple great posts for me about composting {here and here} and I’m sure we’ll see more of him when the spring comes around. But now his wife Caitlyn has joined the blogging world to share her innovative sewing projects.

Caitlyn challenged herself to make clothing for their two little girls for a whole year instead of buying anything. Children grow fast, and outgrow clothing quickly. They also wear them out quickly, being the active little beings that they are. It’s a hefty challenge even for an experienced seamstress, but Caitlyn has tackled it full-on and He Sowed She Sewed is quickly filling up with great posts about her projects.

The really extra neat part is that Caitlyn is trying to reuse old clothes to make the new clothes whenever possible. So far her projects include one that turns an old mens’ shirt into a cute skirt for her oldest daughter. You guys really gotta check out this great husband-wife-blog, if for nothing else than to peak at pictures of their adorable, happy little family, but especially if you have little kiddos of your own and need some inspiration on how to get them involved and excited about gardening, and how to sew cute clothes for them!

Keep up the great work, Caitlyn and Jared!!

30 for 30: Five

Today Mike and I got up early and drove to Duluth, our old stomping ground, for a business meeting and to run some errands. We also had lunch with two of our best friends at one of our favorite little bakeries. I wanted to look nice for our meeting, but also to be comfortable the rest of the day, so I chose a warm sweater, black wool pants, and leather boots. And ah, If I look a little sleepy, it’s because the photos were taken pre-coffee-consumption…

Mr. Charlie Brown the Dog was grumpy. He strongly dislikes it when we leave him home alone, but don’t worry, he got extra love and attention when we got back!

You might be noticing by now that I wear scarves with almost every outfit. They’re warm, and that’s my number one concern during the winter months! Plus, when my family and I traveled to Northern Italy to visit our relatives, my Nonno’s cousin Suzie pulled me aside and showed me her drawer of beautiful Italian silk scarves. She had them in dozens of different colors and patterns, and each one was more beautiful than the last. So, I guess I feel a little more connected to my Italian roots when I wear a scarf..even if mine aren’t handmade silk masterpieces. This one in particular is a far cry…I got it at Target.

Also, can I just say that I have realized two things after taking these pictures of myself? One, I need a haircut. Two, I need to stop taking outfit pictures as I am running out the door in a hurry! My apologies for both. But I never claimed to be a fashion blogger!
