The Perry Portable Poultry System

Posted on June 30th, 2012 by Tonia 3 Comments

Michael Perry is a local celebrity. He’s an author and farmer and he can sometimes be found hanging out at the same bar that we hang out at, which we think is awesome because he’s famous and so normal at the same time.

But, like most celebrities, he has the highest quality things in life. Even when it comes to his chickens. Check out this short video about his sexy chicken rig and be very, very jealous:

Watch Michael Perry: Chicken Shack on PBS. See more from In Wisconsin.

It’s Saturday and the sun is shining and the birds are singing. Mike and I just finished feeding and watering all our animals and are headed into town for the farmer’s market, hoping to catch a delicious breakfast burrito at Sean and Britton’s stand {they make the best homemade tortillas!} before they run out {they’re very popular, obvs.}

Happy weekend!

The fall colors are beckoning us out into the woods. So tomorrow we’re embarking on an impromptu little backpacking trip in the hills with a couple friends and our dogs.

And then, as soon as I emerge from the wilderness, I have to jump in the car with my folks and trek down to Columbus, Ohio for a wedding. It’ll be approximately 13 hours of books-on-tape and the ABC game. Yikes. Please tweet with me to keep me from poking my eyes out with boredom!

Get outside and play in this glorious fall weather! I’ll meet you back here in a week!

cabin-ho!

Cabin signs found here and here. Vintage minnow bucket found here.

We’re packing up and heading out to my family’s cabin- affectionately nicknamed Woodchuck because there used to be a very ornery one living under it- for the weekend. As you can see, it’s situated on the prettiest little private lake in the world {I’m not biased at all.}

My brother and his girlfriend, who happen to be our two very best friends, will be there as well. With everyone’s busy schedule this summer we haven’t seen much of each other, so this has been a highly anticipated weekend and we’re all pretty stoked about it. I might even stay until Monday or Tuesday….it’s so very hard to leave paradise!

Some of you have already sent me confessions and questions, and my brain has been cooking up solutions, so meet me back here next week for the first Dear T&M post! And in the meantime, have a glorious weekend!!

Sunday Brunch

Posted on July 31st, 2011 by Tonia 2 Comments

We were out a *little* past our bedtime last night with friends. Ok, a lot past. And {old farts that we are} we paid for it bigtime this morning in the form of raging headaches and general orneriness. Luckily, we have a secret weapon against such mornings: brunch.

Brunch is maybe my most favorite thing that humans ever invented. Brunch is especially awesome when its contents are composed of fresh, local ingredients. And in that regard at least, this was a rockstar brunch.

The pretty pink potatoes came out of our garden, and so did the kale that we sautéed them with. The flour in the pancakes was grown and ground down the road from us. The milk, too. I picked the blueberries yesterday at a farm in Bayfield. The eggs came from Sarah & Bob’s chickens, living in our yard. The maple syrup was made by my family. The bacon came from Blaise and Jes’s farm down the road.

We fed our souls with laughter and fellowship, and our bellies with yummy morsels.

See how much happier we all look already? I’m telling ya, brunch is a miracle worker.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- we’re so blessed to live in a community full of family farms and folks who care about their community, the earth, and good food. Couldn’t ask for anything more than this right here.

And after this happened, I got my bum to the beach, read my book and fell asleep for a while, and floated in {the deliciously ice-cold} Lake Superior for two whole hours. So in other words, this was a pretty fantastic weekend.
