Fresh Local Foods

Posted on June 17th, 2011 by Tonia 8 Comments

A couple of cool kids down the road from us, Alan and Alison, started their own organic produce company this summer: High Five Produce. They, together with a few other farms nearby, started the Washburn Farmer’s Market.

The next closest Farmer’s Market is a couple towns over, so we’re thrilled that they got one started right here in our town! It’s so much fun to be able to walk or bike over to their stand on Friday afternoons and chat with them and check out what’s good. We usually leave with a bag of salad greens, or a bunch of rhubarb {grown by the kids at the elementary school}, or a bar of soap.

We’re SO lucky to live in an area where fresh, organic, local food is plentiful. It seems like there is a farm around every corner, and we can get just about any kind of meat, dairy, and produce we want from a local source. Eating local is the greenest way to eat- the closer to home your food comes from, the less impact it has on the environment.

Al & Al grow their produce in their front yard currently, and they’re searching for a piece of land in the area to expand to. Someday High Five Produce might be High Five Farm! We’re happy and excited to see their dream growing into reality.

Maybe when our fruit trees are big enough and producing enough, we’ll join them at the stand and sell preserves and fresh fruit! It is going to be exciting to see the Market grow as more and more folks get involved.

Behind them is the studio of another cool kid in town, Jesse Woodward, who makes sculptures out of scrap metal. It has really been fun to get to know the kids our age in town. They’re doing some really cool things, they’re interesting and fun and have been extremely welcoming and friendly to us. High five to that!

Thank you all for making this a cool place to live!

Washburn Farmer’s Market members: High Five Produce {produce} / Maple Hill Farm, Washburn {whole wheat flour, soap, yarn, produce} / Northwind Farm , Bayfield {fruit jams} / Wild Girl Farm, Washburn {raw honey} / Washburn Elementary Farm-to-School {produce}

P.S. If you like the shirts they’re wearing, I could score one for you. Alison printed them herself on reclaimed t-shirts from the thrift-store and they’re selling them at the stand for $5.

And Just Like That, It’s Summer.

…But I’m almost afraid to say it out loud! I don’t want to jinx us. Today was HOT and sunny and gorgeous, and we spent the entire thing outside with our friends who are visiting from the Twin Cities.

They were so kind to want to help us get some of our seedlings in the ground. Laboring under the hot sun is a lot more fun with good company.

Well, some of us worked hard…and some of us just laid in the sun…

We didn’t work the whooooole time. We walked to the Farmer’s Market in town and made some delicious meals together, which resulted in some colorful compost {too bad I didn’t snap any shots of the meals themselves! We were just too darn eager to eat….}

There was time for grad-school homework….

And we even snuck in a couple naps and quiet reading time….

LOOK at those apple blossoms! They were floating down all around me while I was laying there, every time the breeze rustled the tree. Paradise.

And they make the house smell heavenly.

Now, we’re off to take a dip in the big lake to cool our hot bodies before dinner. Happy Summer!!!

Reuse Tues: Me, Over There

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon another gal tweeting the #ReuseTues hashtag! It was a very exciting moment and we instantly started emailing about doing guest posts for each other. I’m honored to be over on Kaylee’s blog today talking about reusing milk jugs, coffee cans, and mason jars. Go check it out!

He Sowed She Sewed

Posted on February 24th, 2011 by Tonia No Comments

Two of my very best friends, Caitlyn and Jared, have started blogging together about their two passions: gardening and sewing. We’re all familiar with Jared around here because he has written a couple great posts for me about composting {here and here} and I’m sure we’ll see more of him when the spring comes around. But now his wife Caitlyn has joined the blogging world to share her innovative sewing projects.

Caitlyn challenged herself to make clothing for their two little girls for a whole year instead of buying anything. Children grow fast, and outgrow clothing quickly. They also wear them out quickly, being the active little beings that they are. It’s a hefty challenge even for an experienced seamstress, but Caitlyn has tackled it full-on and He Sowed She Sewed is quickly filling up with great posts about her projects.

The really extra neat part is that Caitlyn is trying to reuse old clothes to make the new clothes whenever possible. So far her projects include one that turns an old mens’ shirt into a cute skirt for her oldest daughter. You guys really gotta check out this great husband-wife-blog, if for nothing else than to peak at pictures of their adorable, happy little family, but especially if you have little kiddos of your own and need some inspiration on how to get them involved and excited about gardening, and how to sew cute clothes for them!

Keep up the great work, Caitlyn and Jared!!
