Garden Progress

Tomatoes and basil and beets, oh my!

Spent a productive afternoon in the greenhouse with Mike……and spent waaay too much money on beautiful flowers at Tetzner’s up the road. But it was worth it. I mean, just LOOK AT THEM!

These babies are going in a big planter for our front porch. I’m pretty stoked that I get to look at them all summer long. Have I mentioned lately that flowers are one of my favorite things?

Hope your gardens are coming along nicely- what are you planting this year? Get out there in this glorious weather!

autumn scene

The leaves are changing slowly this year thanks to a good amount of rainfall over the summer and a gentle progression of cool-cold-colder days, easing us into the middle of autumn.

Usually when the leaves change slowly like this, it means they’ll last a few weeks before turning brown and dropping off. Something as simple as a drive to the grocery store is suddenly a captivating show of fiery colors zipping by on both sides of the road; A grand-finale of life and color before the long winter sleep under stark white blankets.

Brought to you by the color pink.

I was a tangle-haired-scraped-knee tomboy trying to keep up with my boy-friends for most of my childhood, but my girl-friends and I played dress-up a lot.

Our mothers probably spent a small fortune outfitting us with the ugliest old prom dresses from Goodwill so that we could play Laura Ingalls Wilder, Maid Marion from Robin Hood, or basically any fictional female character who required a sparkly dress and a British accent.

One day at my neighbor Paula’s house, I was wearing a fluffy, gauzy pink mess and Paula’s aunt took one look at me and gasped, “Oh! Honey, pink is your color!”

I kind of loved pink after that.

These tiny roses and enormous pink lilies are happening in our yard right now, and I can’t get enough of them! One of the things I am going to miss most about summer is the flower garden. I believe the sunflowers will be the next to bloom, and they’ll mark the end of the season.

fairwell to the peonies

I promised photos of the white peonies once they bloomed, and they finally have. They are planted in a shady spot, so they were slower to come around than the rest.

They quickly made it into the vase on our dining room table…

The pink ones are mostly all wilted now. Here are the last photos I took of them while they still looked good:

I’m sad that they’re over, and already can’t wait for them to bloom again next year!! But I have more to look forward to yet: the lilies will be the next flower in the yard to bloom. What’s blooming in your yard?
