First Day of Spring

Posted on March 20th, 2012 by Tonia 9 Comments

Today is the first official day of spring! Lake Superior is almost completely melted. Mike and I went out for a stroll along the shore to see the sun glittering on the remaining ice shards. There was mist rising off the water and the Apostle Islands were crystal clear in the distance. It was a magnificently beautiful afternoon.

T-shirt and shorts in March! This is unheard of. It has been an extraordinarily warm month. We almost wanted to jump in for a swim……..almost.

I love living here.

how fantastic to live near Lake Superior. I grew up near Lake Michigan and miss it so much. We visited Lake Superior on the Michigan side a few times when I was growing up. Once, when I was 4 (1969, ack!) we camped in Wilderness state park, in the UP of Michigan. My shoes had gotten soaked, and on the way home my mom was hanging them out the car window to dry. She dropped one on the Mackinac bridge! I have a vague memory of waiting while my mom had the bridge patrol drive her to pick it up. Ahh, memories.

Haha! Awesome story, Trish! Wilderness State Park is beautiful…I grew up right on the border with the UP so we spent a lot of weekends camping up there.

Happy Spring to you too, Pam!

Happy Spring!! We have beautiful weather – and the first day of spring is my eldest daughter’s birthday, so it always takes me back to that sunny March of 1984!! Enjoy!!

    Hi Tonia!

I found your website in connection with your clothing diet/challenge a while back and check back in from time to time. I love it! I am trying to introduce a little more nature and simplicity into my life, too. I started a clothing diet of my own in November where I’m giving away 10 things for everything I buy (except that I realized I really just wanted to be radical and give away a lot, so I did, which means I could buy for a while without donating, but there’s not much I really want!).

I haven’t been able to convince myself to cut my hair short in the interest of using less shampoo, though. How are you enjoying your shorter hair? It’s great on you – looks like you have thick but shiny and straight hair naturally. Mine is wavy and coarse and not very cooperative! A little weight sometimes helps. Sometimes just makes it bigger.

    Happy spring!

Hi Rebecca! I love your clothing diet idea. That would be a great thing to do every year. I have been tempted to buy some new clothes for summer….maybe I will donate a whole bunch of stuff, too! :)

I like my shorter hair a lot, but like you said, it’s straight. I think if I had curly/wavy hair, I would want it to be longer. Longer hair doesn’t necessarily mean using more shampoo, though….you could use a biodegradable shampoo {I like Desert Essence}, or use a baking-soda wash instead of a store-bought shampoo. My mom uses baking-soda and her hair has nice volume and looks great! You’d never know she doesn’t use “real” shampoo.

Happy spring! Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for the tips! I like the idea of baking soda. Right now I’m using a sulfate-free curl-enhancing shampoo I buy at Whole Foods called “Beautiful Curls” {http://www.beautifulcurls.com/}(the Shea Butter version). That plus a little (okay, a lot of) mousse has been a pretty good wash-and-go option. It’s also fair-trade.

The Clothing Diet has been great, and it allows me to continue to shop. Like you, I like new-to-me clothes from time to time, and I’m allowing myself that with the caveat that I have to get rid of what I am no longer in love with…
