Raising Backyard Turkeys: Chicks in a Box

Posted on April 10th, 2012 by Tonia 8 Comments

A box arrived in the mail containing two tiny baby turkeys. Their little peep-peep-peep noises are just about the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard, and they’re so fuzzy!

They were shivering with cold, so we got them under a heat lamp right away {they need to be kept at 90 degrees for several weeks} and fed and watered them. They slept huddled together under the lamp for several hours. When they woke, they were much more lively and they pecked at their food and splashed around in their water dish.

They get a little bigger every day, it’s incredible how fast they’re growing! Yesterday we let them out of the box to run around the kitchen. They’re so brave- they run right up to Charlie, who is scared of them and runs the other way. I sat real still and they climbed up into my warm hand, hunkered down and dozed off.

The chickens will arrive just like this in about a week. I can’t wait!

Yes! I ordered chicks that will arrive in June – I cannot wait. We hope to get turkeys next year… Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the birds!

How fun for your little one to raise up some chicks! Mike and I were just lamenting the fact that raising all these farm animals would be even more fun to do with kids…

Is that an announcement, Tone? Haha! I’m excited to see all your animal additions next weekend!

Nahaha, no Brother J, it’s not an announcement. Just an observation. :)

  6. BABY TURKLETS! Gaaah! The spring order from McMurray Hatchery was always a BIG TO-DO at our local feed store. I am living my fowl fantasy through you, and taking your book recommendations in the mean time.

    LOUISE ERDICH iS AMAZING.

    xo.

  7. Just stumbled onto your blog (which I love), and I have to say I am so excited about the baby turkeys. I can’t wait until my husband and I reach a point in our lives where we’re able to include baby animals of all sorts (right now he’s in grad school and we live in an apartment), so I enjoy living vicariously through those who can do that, ha :)

This brings back childhood memories of baby turkeys and chicks in a box by our woodstove, the cheep-cheep turk-turks, and that special odor of hot poop and wood shavings! Thanks for the flashback, and enjoy these guys while they’re tiny–soon they’ll be awkward adolescents following you around the property.
