Chicken Shopping

Hey Beth, guess what we did tonight?

We ordered chickens from a catalog!! After a failed attempt to hatch our own, we decided what the heck, let’s just adopt.

Our friends Jen and Trevor are getting in on the action, because the minimum order from Murray McMurray is 25 birds. It was actually their brilliant idea to share an order.

Speckled Sussex, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons….there are so many choices, it’s so hard to pick! It’s going to be a happy day this spring when those boxes show up on our porch.

P.S. How hilarious/cute/endearing are the guys- snuggled up together on the couch, eating snacks and picking out their chickens??

but did you get the “free rare chicken” that comes with every McMurray full order? And when it arrives, how will you decide who gets the little beast?

    So excited for you!

Do you remember when Olivia ordered a carton of Chicks as part of her senior art show, ( a performance piece, sort of :) ) and gave them to Cate’s farm afterwards? She had little chicks running around the gallery, and I remember one escaped! They were soooooo cute!

Awesome! My dad has 17 chickens and gets about 4 eggs per day. He hatched these, and just had 20 more chicks over the holidays that were so cute! The plus to ordering them is you can get all hens- he ended up with 5 roosters the first time and does not really want them around because they are mean to the grandkids! He got a few Americanas, and they are cool because they lay green eggs!! There is also a breed that lays turquoise eggs, but I can think of it off hand…I am sure you can google it or find it in the catalog. Good luck! I can’t wait to move out of the city and get chickens of my own!

yup, they are pretty darn cute. I bet our chicks will be cuter though!

We’re putting in an order with our local 4H so that local kids will be doing the breeding and hatching for us this Spring. The best part is that the minimum is really low.

We had a few different kinds of chickens in Tacoma. Rhode Island Whites, Barred Rock, Leghorns, Black Copper Marans, but HANDS DOWN my favorite and the ones with the most interesting personalities were all of our Buckeyes. They’re SO funny, feisty, and cold-weather-hearty. Loved them!
