It maybe wouldn’t be so bad if we were just sitting around with iced tea in hand, but this summer has been the opposite of leisurely. As you all know, we’re planning our wedding {two months away!}. But what you may not know is that we are also getting our home ready for sale {are we crazy?? Yep.}

The pull of country life has just become too strong. Mike and I both grew up in rural areas, and we can’t kid ourselves any longer. We constantly crave more space, more quiet, and more flexibility. We love Duluth. Love it. And we love our beautiful house and cute neighborhood. But…

We found our dream hobby farm {and I mean, OMG this place is awesome} about an hour from Duluth, and we have not been able to get it off our minds ever since we first stumbled upon it. It is everything we have always talked about someday having. After much thought, we’ve decided to get our house on the market as quickly as possible, and make an offer on Perfect Magical Dream Farm.

So, instead of working on my wedding tan and sipping iced tea, I have been painting walls like a mad woman. They look awesome, by the way. Anyone want to buy a beautifully restored old Victorian {everything is brand new in it, we were the first folks to live in it after it was restored} home on Duluth’s west side? It has really been an amazing place to live…I am going to be a total wreck on the day we drive away in the U-Haul.

The probable move to the country brings up an itty bitty issue……Itty Bitty Impact has always been about how to live greener while still being a “normal” urban person/family. So, the nature of the blog might be changing in the near future. I am a little bummed about this, because I think more people can relate to our current urban situation…Whereas I don’t think very many of you live on a solar-powered hobby farm.

But I hope that I can keep the blog relateable, helpful and interesting for everyone nevertheless! And, many of the topics that I will likely be writing about “from the farm” are totally do-able in an urban setting as well {canning veggies, gardening, solar-power living, keeping chickens, etc.}

Speaking of urban vs. rural…which is the greener way to live anyways? I think it totally depends. That issue would make a great blog post…but for now, I must get back to beautifying our house so we can sell it!!

Sometimes green lifestyle changes are born from necessity, and I like it when that happens. I had a problem: my car broke down...and the solution hit me over the head like "duh!" This week's Itty Bits Challenge is to get yourself to work at least one day a week by means of either bycicle, bus, or carpool.

My car is a ‘96 Subaru station wagon with over 200,000 miles on it. It’s not a glamorous car, but I paid cash for it so I’ve never had any payments, my insurance is super affordable, and it has never needed any major repairs {until now…doh!}. I’ve owned it since I was a senior in high school and I’m going to keep on owning it until its dying day.

That car has stuck by my side through many adventures. We’re like old friends. And although my human friends like to call it rude names sometimes {”grocery getter” being one of the nicer ones}, I don’t care what they think. I still drive the Subie with pride in my heart. Sadly, this week, Subie has started making some unusual noises. It appears that I am going to have to bring the old girl in for some repairs. I won’t have time to deal with this until the weekend, so in the meantime I have ‘er parked, and I had to explore other options for transportation to and from the office.

My first instinct was to ride my bike, which is what I normally do in the summer months. But it’s only April. The weather here in MN hasn’t quite warmed up enough for early morning bike rides. And I really like drinking coffee on my way to work. I also thought of taking the bus. Our house is right on the bus route…but the bus takes an hour and a half to get downtown, which means I would have to get up at about 5 am instead of my normal 7 am. I’m not a morning person.

Then it hit me…one of my coworkers lives nearby…maybe he would consider carpooling with me. I have no idea why I never thought of this before {maybe I just enjoy my solitary drives to work…my mug of coffee, my fave radio stations, my embarrassingly-manly-morning-voice when I try to sing along.} But when my coworker happily agreed to pick me up on his way, I thought “this could be the start of something.”

We’ve been riding together all week now, and I quite like it. We’re saving fossil fuels, and we’re more awake and cheerful when we get to the office because we’ve been enjoying pleasant conversation for 20 minutes already. I feel silly that we never even considered doing this before, but perhaps the timing just wasn’t right until now {I have only been working at this place for a year, so maybe I just wasn’t comfortable enough to bring up the idea before.}

Sometimes green lifestyle changes are born from necessity, and I like it when that happens. I had a problem, and the solution hit me over the head like “duh!” So, without further ado, this week’s Itty Bits Challenge is to get yourself to work at least one day a week by means of either bycicle, bus, or carpool. Don’t do it for me….do it for Earth Day.

This week the challenge is to eat better meat. And if you can't find good meat {no hormones, grass fed/vegetarian fed, family farm, local, organic, free-range} then eat NO meat. This is no simple task, especially for Wisconsin-born-and-bred-brat-loving kids like us. The Duluth Farmer's Market is not open for the season yet, and although our grocery store does a fantastic job offering locally grown produce and all kinds of organic goodies, they are slacking in the meat department-- they don't stock anything but Gold n' Plump {don't be fooled by the packaging that claims their chickens come from family farms!} So, I wrote the grocery store a letter with my complaint. If you're in the same boat, please write to your local grocery store. Stores should respond to the needs of their customers, so if enough of us do this, we might just make an impact!

My family has been making syrup for 23 years now, and it is a wonderful activity that brings us together every spring {nothing bonds people like the outdoors, honest hard work, and a sweet treat to reward you in the end.} I am excited to share the process with you and hope that maybe you’ll give it a try with your family. You will hear more about all that soon…but first, let’s get on with a new Itty Bits post.

Our last Itty Bits Challenge was to NEVER FORGET TO BRING YOUR REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE!! I used all caps so that hopefully you can feel my frustration a little. Because, the sad fact is, this is the hardest bad habit for me to break. Why?!? It seems like such a simple thing to do! But somehow I am so used to just using the paper/plastic bags at the grocery store, and it is really, really hard for me to remember to bring in my reusable bags. This is my major eco-sin, and I am confessing it to you all in hopes that embarrassing myself is what it takes for me to finally change my ways.

Alright! That felt good! Moving on!

Recently, the Mr. and I went out for beer and wings at a local restaurant {yep, we occasionally indulge in the fantasy that we’re still in college}. It was a delicious, cheap, and satisfying dinner. Until we noticed something that grossed both of us out beyond the point of return: the chicken wings were SO tender. They were SO tiny. They SO did not come from any real-life chicken I have ever seen before.

Now, we’re no strangers to the fact that most of the meat served at restaurants come from huge farms/huge factories where the meat is chocked-full of hormones and other wonderful things, and the treatment of animals is complete and utter horse-crap. It is for this reason that we avoid chain restaurants and usually eat at places that serve meat from local farms. We kind of pride ourselves in our level of “awareness” on the topic of meat…which is why it was a shock when we realized what we had just eaten, without even thinking twice about it. How many other awful things are we consuming without a worry in the world? Shiver.

So, without further ado, this week’s challenge is to eat better meat. And if you can’t find good meat {no hormones, grass fed/vegetarian fed, family farm, local, organic, free-range} then eat NO meat.

This is no simple task, especially for Wisconsin-born-and-bred-brat-loving kids like us. The Duluth Farmer’s Market is not open for the season yet, and although our grocery store does a fantastic job offering locally grown produce and all kinds of organic goodies, they are slacking in the meat department– they don’t stock anything but Gold n’ Plump {don’t be fooled by the packaging that claims their chickens come from family farms!} So, I wrote the grocery store the following letter:

Hi Super One,

I am a loyal customer and never shop anywhere else for groceries. Thank you for doing a great job to stock organic and locally grown produce. It’s really important to me to support family farms. Your prices on these types of foods are excellent- far cheaper than Whole Foods for the same brands.

I just have one bone to pick…You only carry one brand of chicken: Gold n’ Plump. I have a problem with this because of how Gold n’ Plump treats the chickens that come to them. Yes, they might come from family farms in MN, but once they arrive at Gold n’ Plump they are treated terribly. I am really bummed that I don’t have any other choice but to buy this brand. I would really appreciate it if you could stock another option in addition to Gold n’ Plump. There are several excellent local farms that can provide FDA approved meat, all grass-fed and free-range:

Earthwize Natural Meats is a coalition of small-scale family farmers committed to sustainable, environmentally responsible farming and to providing healthy, natural foods for their customers. Beef is available year round in variety packs of 25 to 50 pounds. Pork is seasonal and is sold in variety packs of 30 to 40 pounds. Chicken is seasonal (spring through fall) and is available as whole chickens, which average 5 pounds and are packaged six to a box. All meat is frozen and processed at plants meeting USDA standards.

…If you’re in the same boat, please write a similar letter to your local grocery store. Stores should respond to the needs of their customers, so if enough of us do this, we might make an impact!

Last week our challenge was to time our showers and keep them under five minutes. How did you do? It was tough for me, but I'm proud to say I was able to do it. I'd like to shorten my time even more. I think if I do it gradually, I won't even notice the difference.

Our next challenge is perhaps something many of you are already doing: Use reusable shopping bags. Mike and I have about 10 different reusable bags for groceries...and yet, emberassingly, we often forget them and are forced to choose between paper or plastic. This is a bad habit that I am dying to change...hence, a perfect Itty Bits Challenge!

Most of us don’t live off the grid in the woods. We have houses that need maintenance…We have jobs that require us to have cars…We have families that have needs and wants. But, I definitely believe that a “normal” urban life can also be a green life.

It’s important to remember that low-impact-living is a process, not something that happens over night. I have found that when I try to make too big of changes, I end up not being able to sustain the new practice and revert back to my old ways. Our weekly goals/challenges are all about taking small, sustainable steps towards a greener lifestyle. Please leave us a comment if you have an idea for an Itty Bits Challenge!

Last week our challenge was to time our showers and keep them under five minutes. How did you do? It was tough for me, but I’m proud to say I was able to do it. If there was anyone who needed to take this challenge, it was me {taking hot showers in the winter is just the ticket to get your core heated up, so I tend to stand around in there and lolly-gag.} I’d like to shorten my time even more. I think if I do it gradually, I won’t even notice the difference.

Bits of green around the web, with a spring theme:

You Grow Girl teaches how to start your own compost pile (urban friendly!)

Maple syrup season is only two months away! I can’t wait for the annual harvest at my parents house in northern Wisconsin. Making maple syrup is a 25-year-long tradition in my family. Give it a try! Learn how here.

Yep, it’s true, environmental awareness feels like a burden sometimes. We’re not alone in feeling that way. The Environment Report discusses common green dilemas in their daily podcast.

If you’re spring-breaking this year, make it an eco-vacation.

Not only are these my favorite kind of dog, but they’re made in my homeland of Peru and your purchase supports fair trade artists in developing countries.

A family that’s living the dream.

That’s all for this week! Happy weekend, and don’t forget your reusable bags when you head to the store!

Happy Friday! I’d like to introduce you to our new series, Itty Bits: a compilation of inspiring tid-bits from all over the internet. Itty Bits is also a chance to end each week by setting a goal for the following week. For example, this week’s goal is to begin taking shorter showers in order to conserve water. We’ll be timing our showers and trying to stay under five minutes.

Please join us in these weekly goals, and share your experience with us. Were you able to stick to the goal? Was it challenging, or did you find it easy?
