The Paper Towel Chronicals:

Day 1: Instead of wrapping my breakfast in paper towel and heading to work like usual, I put my toast on a small plate. Halfway out to my car, it slid off the plate and onto the ground. I still ate it...

Day 2: I tried the plate again, and this time made it all the way to work. As I was walking into the office, my toast lept off the plate and landed on the dirty parking lot. I didn't eat it.

Hunger is good motivation...I either need a nice handmade lunch-sack, or I need to eat less slippery food.

From both a worldview and a “pocketbook” view, it makes good sense - as it always has – to use our resources wisely and reduce waste. The two of us have become more aware of the miles we drive, and have made a successful effort to reduce our gas consumption by buying local, and combining trips. We buy less (and choose items with less packaging), and throw away less. We repurpose or recycle as much as possible. In 2010, I resolve (among other things) to avoid buying bottled water, and to always use reusable market bags. We are also going to plant a vegetable garden! As for paper towels? To conserve, I rip them in half or thirds for small jobs but, sorry, I’ll never be able to give them up completely without a twelve-step program! ;-)

I've always believed in "1% solutions" - that is, doing what you can with what you have, instead of focusing on the 100% solution to any problem, which most often is impossible or impractical, so you just don't do ANYTHING! So one of the things I want to do this year is keep increasing the amount of locally-grown food we eat. I already have chickens in the freezer from a local farmer; now I want to get as many of my fruits and vegetables locally this year as I can. And, yes, I will use less paper towel. Thanks for the reminder!
